The non-profit association Ichthyosis Stichting België was founded in March 1997 and its purpose was and still is :
· to provide information to parents and tutors;
· to look after the individual and common needs of the patients;
· to stimulate the medical world in its research.
Ichthyosis is a non-contagious, genetically determined desease. The patients show a partial or even complete squamiform skin.
As of the moment of their birth, the children need very special care for they have a extremely dry skin that constantly flakes as if they were severely burnt. They need to live in a not too dry, not too warm environment.
The non-profit association :
· published a manual meant for parents and tutors;
· organizes a yearly event during which the children may have a pleasant day without being gazed at;
· In collaboration with foreign associations they stimulate the medical world in its research and the development of medication and products for medical attendance. Luckyly there is a huge progress and some professors are even willing to come to the association’s gatherings for explanation;
· fights for a better refund of the products for medical attendance by the national health service for these products represent a large expense to the children’s parents;
· does not receive any assistance of any authority and only survives by the help of private persons, people of the world of strips and small companies.
